Reclaimed Wood Wall is DONE!

The reclaimed wood wall is finally done and it looks incredible! Unfortunately the room is still incomplete, but you can see its near final state. The wood arrived via a freight shipment from PA in perfect condition – not one warped or damaged board! I had the wood pattern laid out on the floor and the carpenter worked his magic. This project might look complicated, but it’s fairly simple, especially if you can hire a professional.

The playful Louis Ghost Chair by Kartell has become one of my favorite design elements for a room. It’s Victorian era meets postmodern! This translucent chair is a great way to dress up your office, vanity, hallway or dining room. I love this chair so much that I plan to use them in my wedding next month!

Reclaimed Wood Wall

I’ve been searching for ideas and inspiration for my next project and wanted to share my initial findings. I’m going to create a reclaimed wood accent wall for a modern living room. This endeavor is my first, but certainly not the last! This project is for a 13′ w x 9′ h living room wall and I intend to use salvaged barn wood. The key to this project is selecting the right boards to complement a modern space – and not creating a rustic log cabin vibe!

My first trip was to Baltimore to visit Second Chance, which has a large selection of salvaged lumber. I came across these amazing pieces of barn wood, which would need trimming, but all have wonderful character and perfect for an accent wall.

I also found several salvage yards online, such as Keystone Vintage Lumber and Aurora Mills Architectural Salvage, that offer a much wider selection of boards in a cleaner state. If purchasing from an online salvage company expect to pay freight shipping charges, however this could be your only option especially if you don’t have a lumber yard close by or can’t find any pieces that suit your needs.

For my project I decided to use Keystone Vintage Lumber and will pick one of these three options below (samples are in the mail!):

Skulls for the Modern Home

What was once considered a Southwestern and country style, game horns and antlers are now beginning to work their way into modern and mainstream design. These horns and antlers can add the right amount of excitement to your space such as antlers as decor on your coffee table, horns above the fireplace, cluster on a wall, or hung above the headboard in a bedroom. To make sure you steer clear of the Southwestern style, opt for silver-leaf and/or aluminum dipped skulls, painted antlers and copper patina finishes.

I wanted to share my latest purchase that I stumbled across at Saint Dizier Home, while vacationing in Sonoma Valley, CA a few weeks ago. This is a silver-leaf bison skull – truly a piece of art!

This style takes us back to the basics, with a simplistic design that is down to earth, cozy and warm. To achieve this chic-but-edgy look, seek out furnishings with clean lines and cool neutral tones. Find unique pieces with patina finish, deconstruction and up-cycled or recycled (think mid century). Lastly, have a balanced mix of different elements in your space – by incorporating metals, woods and concrete.

Pouf!

In case you’re wondering what a pouf is, it’s a round ottoman shaped decorative accent that can be used as seating, side tables, footstools or a floor pillow type accessory for a room. Poufs are also referred to as Moroccan Poufs or ottomans and come in every color, shape and fabric imaginable. Decorating with poufs is a creative way to add color to a monochromatic empty room. Accentuate the color of the pouf with dramatic stitching like the pictures below. Be fun and bold in your selection!
